Denis Hellebrandt da Silva
My interdisciplinary background includes oceanography, fisheries and social sciences. Learning and communication are key elements of my work. I have developed and applied specific tools designed to facilitate the participation of diverse stakeholders in coastal governance in Africa, Asia and in my home country Brazil. As a PhD in International Development I have carried out research on the effectiveness of natural resources governance, with emphasis on small-scale fisheries, for a wide range of organisations such as the UK Department for International Development, the Rockefeller Foundation and Wildlife Conservation Society. My most recent research has been aimed at the rigorous assessment of scientific evidence, and the empirical evaluation of impact pathways for sustainability and poverty reduction in coastal settings. Ongoing projects include the implementation of a livelihood and food security survey in Timor Leste, and the global review of evidence on the impact of livelihood diversification interventions in aquatic systems.
