Isusko Vivas Ziarrusta

In the last fifteen years, Isusko Vivas Ziarrusta (born in Bilbao, 1975) has dedicated his academic and professional life to researching processes of urban transformation and renovation in Bilbao and other cities, which affect both the 'scales of the city' and inherited problems of identity and planning in post-industrial metropolises.

This has led him to focus on areas such as urban development and land use planning, with an inter-disciplinary approach enhanced by a heterodox aesthetic view that, originally drawn from the plastic arts, extends to other fields of knowledge such as socio-anthropological questions applied to the city, and sociocultural phenomena. As a result of this interest, he has regularly, continuously published books and numerous articles in scientific journals. Since 2004, when he obtained a PhD, he has taught in various departments of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and currently holds the post of tenure track lecturer (permanent) in the Department of Sculpture.

He has held art exhibitions and participated in conferences on architectural heritage, remodelling, art and public sculpture. He has received bachelor’s degree and postgraduate training in the fine arts, contemporary Basque art, urban development and anthropology from institutions such as the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the University of Deusto, the UNED and the University of Extremadura (where he obtained a PhD in Anthropology).

In recent years, he has carried out research as a member of consolidated research groups (recognized by the Basque Government) in the Basque University System (IT-655-13, Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, UPV/EHU, 2013-2015) and in multidisciplinary teams working on national research, development and innovation projects recognized and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation “HAR2011-23678. Arte y ecología: estrategias de protección del medio natural y recuperación de territorios degradados” (2012-2014) and by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness “HAR2013-48498-P. CIMAR La ciudad y el mar. La patrimonialización de las ciudades portuarias” (2015-2017).

The general areas of knowledge that form the basis of the specific fields of knowledge are the following:

1) Plastic arts, sculpture, public sculpture, theory, criticism and analysis of art
2) Land use planning, landscape, urban development, the city and the urban space, waterfronts and edges
3) Social and cultural anthropology, urban anthropology

These correspond to the following codes in the UNESCO nomenclature for fields of science and technology:

1) 6203.05: Fine art aesthetics / 6203.09: Sculpture
2) 6201.03: Urbanism / 3305.37: Urban planning
3) 51: Anthropology (Social and Cultural) / 5199: Other anthropological specializations (Urban anthropology)
