Juan Luís Alegret Tejero

Lectured at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Central American University of Managua, Nicaragua. Since 1995, he has worked as tenured lecturer in anthropology in the Department of History and Art History, University of Girona. He has held numerous positions of responsibility at the University of Girona, including director of the Office of Cooperation.

He has participated as a lecturer on courses and seminars, including the international master’s degree in Fisheries Management at the University of Alicante, and the master’s degree in Cultural Heritage at the University of Girona.

His research work has focused on management and the formation of associations in maritime fishing, from the perspective of the social sciences. He has spent periods of research in Nicaragua, Canada and the United States of America. He is coordinator of the Maritime Fishing, Social Studies Group (GESPM), and since 2000 he has been director of the Maritime Studies Chair, based in Palamós.

He has participated and led many local, national and international research projects on fishing and maritime topics from the perspective of management, associations, history and heritage. Notably, he directed the Inventory of Maritime and Fishing Heritage of the Costa Brava, as well as projects on naval construction and gastronomy of the sea, the history of the port of Palamós, the skiff fishing community and the fishermen’s guild, fishing management in Europe and the implementation of marine reserves, among other subjects.

Since the 1990s, he has worked closely with the fishing sector in Palamós to design, implement and monitor measures for economic improvement and sustainability, many of which are pioneering in the Mediterranean region. He participated actively in projects that were not fruitful, such as Giropesca or the Marine Reserve of the Islas Hormigas, and other successful projects that are fully functioning, such as the implementation of the Gamba de Palamós guarantee stamp and the Management Plan for the Gamba de Palamós.

He is also one of the driving forces behind Documare, a documentation centre on fishing and the sea at the Fishing Museum in Palamós, and the Espai del Peix (Fish Place) in Palamós. These projects use heritage to increase the town’s tourism and cultural attractions.
